The Patience of the Portrait.
Portraits crafted with vintage cameras and a reverence for process.
Wet Plate Portraits
I’m drawn to portraiture for the quiet collaboration involved in it, the conversation, the attention, and the brief moment where something of a person reveals itself in front of the camera.
Using the wet plate collodion process gives the portraits a particular presence and texture that modern photography rarely does. The long exposure, the handmade plate, and the imperfections of the process all become part of the final image.
From time to time I make portraits for others here in the Limestone Studio in the Dordogne, usually for those who feel a connection to this slower, more considered way of working.
